Lower emissions and better air quality

Exhaust Air Treatment with Catalysts

Small coffee roasteries in urban areas can have a negative impact on the environment and local residents. The main problems stem from emissions generated during the roasting process: odors, VOCs, CO, NOx, and particulate matter—often in densely built-up areas with limited space for exhaust gas treatment. Without effective exhaust gas treatment and regular maintenance, pollution levels rise and regulatory limits are exceeded.

A catalytic converter reduces the emissions produced during the roasting process by converting them into less harmful substances at low temperatures. This reduces odors, air pollutants, and potential violations of emission limits.

SMOKE
Aerosols produced during the roasting process.

NOx
Nitrogen oxides are produced primarily at high temperatures or during the oxidation of caffeine.

CO
Carbon monoxide, which is produced by the incomplete combustion of coffee beans and the release of gases from them.

VOCs
Formaldehyde and other volatile organic compounds, which are produced primarily through the pyrolysis of organic substances in coffee.

ODORS
The roasting process releases strong-smelling substances that can often be unpleasant for nearby buildings and residents.

Compliance with the TA-Luft

Environmental Issues and Regulations

The TA-Luft is the Technical Guidelines on Air Quality Control. In Germany, it regulates how emissions are measured, monitored, and reduced.

Even in smaller roasting facilities, certain processes (roasting, fuel combustion, exhaust gas treatment) can cause emissions such as dust, odors, VOCs, or NOx. The TA-Luft specifies the following limit values, measurement and reporting requirements, as well as retrofitting and maintenance obligations.

<15 mg/Nm3
Formaldehyde

<350 mg/Nm3
NOx

<20 mg/Nm3
VOCs

<100 mg/Nm3
CO

Catalysts for Shop Roasters

EP-CleanRoast®

The EP-CleanRoast® is Emission Partner’s retrofit solution for small shop roasters. It includes two round catalytic converter modules from the EP-Catalyst series. These reduce all emissions and odors generated during the roasting process. The CleanRoast® can be easily adapted to the specific requirements of your roasting system. Depending on your exhaust air conditions, various sizes (5–30 (60) kg per batch) are available. Additional pre-filtration using a fine-mesh screen and electric heating are included.

A Look at Production

Manufacture of a Catalyst

Emission Partner manufactures every catalytic converter 100% in-house in a 4,000 m² production facility and is therefore not dependent on any suppliers. This is particularly advantageous for custom applications tailored to customer specifications. From the design and manufacture of the metal substrate to the coating of the catalytic converters and subsequent metalworking, all production steps are carried out in-house.
