Ensuring Compliance with Limits
Exhaust Air Treatment with Catalysts
Industrial coffee roasting plants have a negative impact on the environment, primarily due to emissions from the roasting process. Key concerns include high VOC and odor emissions, CO, fine dust particles, NOx, and high energy consumption, which increases the carbon footprint. Flue gases and afterburn result in odor and emission pollution in the surrounding area. It is not uncommon for emission limits to be exceeded during maintenance and operation, leading to nuisance for residents and environmental problems.
Exhaust gas treatment systems, such as catalytic converters, significantly reduce these effects. They convert harmful emissions—such as VOCs and odors—into harmless compounds like CO₂ and water. They also reduce CO, NOx, and particulate matter levels by activating reaction processes at specific temperatures. This reduction in emissions improves air quality and reduces environmental impact, often while making exhaust gas treatment more efficient.
Smoke
Aerosols that are produced during the
roasting process.
NOx
Nitrogen oxides are produced primarily at high temperatures or during the oxidation of caffeine.
VOCs
Formaldehyde and other volatile organic compounds, which are produced primarily through the pyrolysis of organic substances in coffee.
CO
Carbon monoxide, which is produced by the release of gases from coffee beans and their incomplete combustion.
Odorants
The roasting process releases strong-smelling substances that can often be unpleasant for nearby buildings and residents.

Compliance with the 4th BImSchV and TA-Luft
Environmental Issues and Regulations
In Germany, the 4th BImSchV (Regulation on Large Combustion Plants) and the BImSchG (Federal Immission Control Act) establish legal requirements to limit the harmful emissions from industrial facilities mentioned above. They protect air quality, the climate, and local residents from adverse effects. The TA-Luft specifies how emissions are to be measured, monitored, and reduced. It sets limit values, measurement and reporting requirements, and verification obligations.

Catalysts for coffee roasting systems
EP Catalyst Module
The EP catalyst module can be used as original equipment or as a replacement in existing systems. We have developed this exhaust gas catalyst based on a robust metal matrix with a reinforced outer structure. Unlike ceramic supports, metal-based catalysts have thinner walls between the active cells. This results in lower back pressure while providing a larger reactive surface area.
Our rectangular EP catalytic converter module is a modular assembly consisting of several rectangular EP catalytic converters. This design ensures internal stability while allowing for flexibility in the external dimensions. You, too, can rely on our 15 years of experience. When it comes to meeting various emission limits, we draw on our existing expertise and can choose from a wide range of catalytic converter technologies.

A Look at Production
Manufacture of a Catalyst
Emission Partner fertigt auf einer Produktionsfläche von 4.000 m2. jeden Katalysator zu 100 % selbst und ist Emission Partner manufactures every catalytic converter 100% in-house in a 4,000 m² production facility and is therefore not dependent on any suppliers. This is particularly advantageous for custom applications tailored to customer specifications. From the design and manufacture of the metal substrate to the coating of the catalytic converters and subsequent metalworking, all production steps are carried out in-house.
